WPC EXPO 2005 基調講演 - Google の拓く次のネット社会

午前中の Amazon の講演 に引き続き、今度は Google の マグラス みづ紀 さんによる「Google の拓く次のネット社会」を聴いて来たので、その感想とプレゼン内容をまとめてみました。

感想

こちらも午前中の Amazon 講演同様、技術的な話、未来展望や web2.0 的な話は特に無く、総合的な「Google の理念とその理念に基づいたサービスの紹介」に終始した内容でした。WPC EXPO 来場者をターゲットにしての講演ってこういう感じの内容になるんですね・・・もっと技術的に突っ込んだ内容を期待していただけにちょっと残念。

内容まとめ

以下、プレゼン中にとったメモを大雑把にまとめてみました:

- Google History

  • Born at Stanford, raised in a garage
  • a research project at Stanford University (1995)
  • Larry Page's BackRub system > later becomes Page Rank (name taken from Mr. Larry)
  • google.stanford.edu
    • 4GB hard disk drives held together with lego blocks
    • starts shutting down stanford's network, so had to move out, to a garage in sillicon valley

- Google Today

  • world's largest search engine, 3 times larger than any other search engine.
  • employees 4989 many of whom are technical/engineering
  • market share : about 56 percent of Internet search referrals

  • 67% of the worlds internet users primarily speak other than english
  • 77% of the worlds internet connected users are outside of the US

- google is Global

  • Google.com in 100+ languages
  • AdWords in 41 languages
  • Accepting 48 currencies
  • AdSense in 22 languages
  • Google News in 22 editions
  • Gmail in 13 languages
  • Google Desktop search in 10 languages

it's not just translation. you have to take into account the market, culture, political issuses, and lot more

important thing is that these services are OPTIONAL. we're not forcing you to open your personal information.

The Inside

- Who Does All this? Who Makes These Things?

  • Talented motivated people
  • workng in small teams of 3-5 people
  • on problems that matter
  • with access to enormous computational resources
  • "20% rule" to explore your own ideas -- can spent 20% time for your own creative work, exploring the world. Gmail, orkut Google news all started from one person's 20% time.
